Walk the dog

Tinker Hill swamp

New Preston, Connecticut.

We took a short walk around a hill overlooking Lake Waramaug and I noticed this small swampy area right off the road. No doubt this water is from the heavy rains we had last week.

It wasn’t “golden hour” by a long shot but trees were making interesting shadows and I thought it might be worth stopping to check out.

Lots happening here: shadows, reflections, and leaves both floating and on the bottom, not to mention the trees. I’d like to get back to this spot earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to see if there are even stronger shadows.

Clouds, snow and shadows

Cirrus clouds on the AT

Cornwall Bridge, Connecticut.

We took a hike south on the Appalachian Trail along the Housatonic River and as we got out onto a big field this amazing clouds blew into view above the ridge to the west. I took ten shots and the clouds were moving so fast that each was completely different.

We hiked all the way down to Kent and then turned around and came back. A few hours later, there wasn’t a cloud in the sky.

Spring-like melt

Out in the middle of a big field there were still patches of snow on top of the grass but they were melting fast. This seems very odd for the end of February; last year at the same time we were snowshoeing on this field.

Low light scarecrows

By the time we returned the sun was very low making for some great shadows, including our own. The Ricoh GR is in my right hand.

United Terminal, O’Hare Airport

Half rotunda, United Terminal

United Terminal B, Chicago, O’Hare Airport designed by Helmut Jahn and built in 1985.

Flying home from visiting my mother in Los Angeles and had hike between gates. I passed by this end rotunda in Terminal B and noticed a lot of sun coming through, a bit too much sun actually (a few of the panels are over exposed). Still, I love the structure of this terminal so broke out the Ricoh GR to attempt a shot.

I shot one of these rotundas in 2013 with a Sony RX1 under better conditions and that post has a second shot that shows more detail on the structure: Roof detail, United Terminal, O’Hare.

Floor with shadow, United Terminal

There was a lot of sun coming through the rotunda skylights as I passed by and after shooting up, I decided to shoot down. The shadows on the floor grid were fantastic.

I shot this floor in 2012 with my iPhone and the shot shows both a reflection of the rotunda and detail in the floor: United terminal floor in Chicago.

The kitchen

Flickr member CWMPFB posted this fascinating long exposure of a kitchen at night with shadows.

For me, these kinds of images are great demonstrations of the idea that interesting images can be found anywhere, you just have to be in the right frame of mind and keep shooting and experimenting.
